Your Whole Company Is One Circuit Away From Stopping

Here is a pattern we see across our client base, in trades and offices alike: one internet circuit fails and the entire business stops. Not degrades. Stops.
Phones, because they run over the internet now. Email. The field service software. The scheduling system. Card payments. The ability to look up a customer’s address. All of it, at once, because all of it depends on the same wire coming into the building.
We have logged this as Priority 1 Critical more than once. It is worth understanding why it happens and what the three tiers of fix actually look like, because they are very different in cost and very different in outcome.
Tier one: one circuit, and everybody waits
This is where most small companies are, usually without having decided to be.
A single business internet connection, everything behind it. When it drops, the answer is to call the provider and wait. The provider will give you a window, and the window is their window.
We support a commercial door company whose internet and phone outages have come through as Priority 1 Critical, more than once. For a company where customers call with a broken door and expect somebody to answer, that is not an IT problem. It is the business being closed with the lights on.
A pest control company we support has had the same failure. Different trade, same shape: a service business whose demand arrives by phone, unable to receive it.
And this is not a trades problem specifically. We have logged the same outage at a law firm, a nonprofit, a dental practice and a manufacturer. Anyone with one circuit is one backhoe away from a very long morning.
Tier two: two circuits, and nobody notices
The fix is not sophisticated and it is not expensive. A second connection, usually cellular, in a router that fails over automatically.
One of our clients has a ticket in our system whose title is, essentially, “Spectrum outage, failover to AT&T.” It came in as Priority 2 rather than Priority 1. That difference is the whole point of this article. Same upstream outage, same provider having a bad day, and the business kept taking calls.
What that setup requires:
- A business-class primary circuit
- A cellular backup with its own SIM, in the same router
- Automatic failover, configured and then actually tested
- Battery backup on the router and phone equipment
- Monitoring, so somebody knows before a customer tells you
For most small businesses the monthly cost of the second connection is less than one lost afternoon. It is the highest-value technology purchase available to a company that answers its phone for a living, and it is boring, which is why it does not get made.
Tier three: stop depending on the building at all
The most interesting version of this is not about the office.
We support a civil engineering firm whose field inspectors work from sites all day, not desks. After their own run of ISP trouble, their field devices stopped depending on any particular building’s internet. The inspectors work on Microsoft Surface tablets with cellular SIMs built in, reaching the company network over Cloudflare Zero Trust rather than a traditional VPN.
The consequence is worth sitting with. An inspector’s ability to open a drawing, mark it up, and log time against a project does not depend on the office circuit, a jobsite connection, or somebody’s hotspot. The device carries its own connectivity. If the office goes dark, the field keeps working.
That is a different design philosophy from “make the office connection more reliable.” It says: assume connectivity will fail somewhere, and make sure the failure is local rather than total.
It is not the right answer for everyone. Cellular data on every device costs more than office wifi, and it only makes sense where people genuinely work away from a desk. But for inspectors, estimators, service technicians and anybody else whose work happens somewhere else, it removes an entire category of outage.
Where to start
Work out which tier you are in. It takes one question: if the internet went out right now, what would still work?
If the answer is “nothing,” you are tier one, and a second circuit with automatic failover is the next thing you should buy. If you already have failover, test it deliberately during business hours, because untested failover is a belief rather than a control. And if you have people who work away from the office all day, ask whether their devices should depend on a building at all.
The companies that handle outages well are not the ones with better providers. Everybody has the same providers. They are the ones who decided in advance what happens when a circuit fails.
