Working with your IT person

We already have an IT person. Do we still need an IT company?

The short answer

Maybe not for everything, but probably for some things. Co-managed IT keeps your IT person in charge of day-to-day support and adds an outside team for the work one person cannot cover alone: 24/7 security monitoring, compliance documentation, Microsoft 365 security, large projects, and backup when they are out. It does not replace them. It gives them backup.

Who does what?

The split is agreed up front and written down. A typical version:

  • Your IT person: day-to-day user support, business-specific applications, onsite and hardware tasks, internal projects.
  • The outside team: 24/7 security operations center (SOC) monitoring and threat response, compliance management, Microsoft 365 security, complex projects and migrations, backup and disaster recovery testing, escalations.
  • Shared: documentation, change management, technology decisions and budget planning.

Why can’t one person do it all?

Security alone is a full-time, around-the-clock job, and a single person also needs sleep, vacations and sick days. The risk is not that your IT person is bad at the job. It is that the job is now bigger than one person.

How does it start?

With an assessment of your environment and an honest conversation with your IT person about where they want help. The details are on our co-managed IT page.

Related questions

Will co-managed IT threaten our IT person's job?
It should do the opposite. A good co-managed setup takes the overnight alerts, the compliance paperwork and the escalations off their plate, so they can spend time on the projects they were hired for.
What is the difference between co-managed and fully managed IT?
With fully managed IT, the outside provider is your whole IT department. With co-managed IT, your internal person stays the first line and the outside team covers specialties and after-hours. Many businesses start one way and move to the other as they grow.
